Urine Test

The testing of urine samples for traces of drugs has become quite common in industry and sports. Urine drug testing is one of the most popular methods used for random drug testing, as it is easy to do and provides quick, accurate results of recent drug use. An alternative to urine testing is Hair Follicle Testing.

What are the Urine Tests like?

There are a number of alternatives available. These include the Integrated Test Cup, the Cassette, Dip Cards, and Dip Strips.

Integrated Test Cup: With this test the cup and the test are combined, so testing is very easy, and there is no handling of the sample. This test can detect up to 10 drugs in a 5 minute test.

Cassette: Here a sample of urine is transferred by pipette onto the test card. Again, up to 10 drugs can be detected in a 5 minute test.

Dip Cards: Test strips are dipped into the urine sample, and up to 10 drugs can be detected in just 5 minutes.

Dip Strip: These are single drug detection strips which are dipped into the urine sample.

What is the detection period?

The urine test kits can detect the presence of drugs in urine for about 3-4 days after the drug has entered the body. These tests can determine up to 10 different drugs at the one time.

Kits are suitable for use for pre employment testing, random workplace testing, random youth testing in schools or sports organisations, and for private at home testing.

What drugs can be tested for?

Urine Tests can be used to test for:
Cocaine (COC), Marijuana (THC), Opiates (OPI), Methamphetamine (mAMP), Amphetamines (AMP), Phencyclidine (PCP), Benzodiazepines (BZO), Barbiturates (BAR) Methadone (MTD), Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA).

Pregnancy Testing.

Urine tests are also used for other personal tests, including pregnancy testing, ovulation and sperm count.

What about Steroids Testing?

Urine testing can also be used to test for steroid use. Both Saliva and Urine Steroid Testing kits are  used by school athletic teams, sport coaches, professional athletes and even parents for steroid testing their teenagers.

Anabolic steroids assist with increasing muscle mass and physical strength, and so are used in sports and bodybuilding to enhance strength or physique. Misuse of steroids is prohibited under anti-doping policy, by many sports organizations. Therefore, a wide range of tests have been designed to detect performance-enhancing drugs abuse by competitors in these sports.

Test kits are available that are suitable for all the above tests.

Laboratory Urine testing is also available. These results are available in about 24 - 48 hours, and patients are referred via a prepaid service.

Home or lab testing provides the accurate results you want. Most of the test kits and lab testing services we promote through Test Country are either FDA approved, FDA cleared, CLIA waived Drug Tests, done by a CLIA accredited laboratory or approved by a respectable organisation or agency. Testing is critical, you need accurate results.

What about Sampling?

How is a Urine Test from the employee or sports person presented for testing?

All aspects of the sample collection and Urine Test are designed to reduce the possibility of the test giving a false result.  For example, those under test will be asked at the time of the sample collection about any current medication they are taking, because some prescription medicines may interfere with the results.  The test results report the level of alcohol, and or the presence of illicit substances, detected in the sample. A positive result is often followed up by a secondary screen, which is then reviewed  by an expert.

The method of sample collection should be conducted to a standard so that if a test result is contested, the testing method can be defended confidently.

It is necessary to comply with a number of important steps for the drug testing to be legal and safe.

The testing should only be carried out as part of an "agreed policy". All samples must  be collected under supervised conditions, but at the same time, respecting human dignity and personal rights. Two identical samples are taken, either at the time of sampling, or the sample can be split in the test laboratory, prior to testing.

A screening test for common drugs is carried out on one sample, resulting in either positive or negative results. Any positive results from this screening test are then to be confirmed by a specific technique. All results are usually reviewed by an expert and reported back. The second sample is kept for further analysis as part of any appeal by the person under test. Confidentiality must be maintained at all times.

For a Urine Test  the urine sample is divided in two.  The first portion is tested using a relatively simple, yet highly accurate screening test.  If the result of the first Urine Test is "non-negative",then a second test is conducted on the second part of the original sample using a different testing process, that serves to confirm whether or not the first analysis was accurate.

What about accuracy?

The efficiency of urine testing is questionable as cheating can occur. The accuracy of the test is also debatable. As well as false positive test results, it is also widely reported that substitution of samples and adulteration of samples occurs frequently. Both are effective methods of avoiding possible positive tests.

Another problem is that most laboratories can not keep up with new forms of drugs and adulterants available, although new tests are constantly evolving.

If your testing regime can overcome these difficulties with confidence then testing is very accurate.

It is also very important to remember that the test only detects the presence of drugs or alcohol in the system. It does not measure the effects on performance or abilities.

An alternative to urine testing which overcomes some of the disadvantages is

Hair Follicle Testing.
